Nationhood: Ties that Bind, or Free?
Ian Williams has been a correspondent at the United Nations for 20 years. His latest book is Rum: A Social and Sociable History (Nation Books, 2006). He holds British and American citizenship and has a Canadian green card. His children also have, from their mother, a claim to Uzbek citizenship. Born in Liverpool, of Welsh, Swedish, and Scots ancestry, and resident in New York State, he pays taxes and votes in the United States, though usually thinks himself European.
