Never did Greek or Roman, or man of any nation, since kings have existed, do what Cortés did in seizing Moctezuma, a most powerful king, in his own house, a very strong place, surrounded by an infinity of people, while Cortés had only 450 companions. The great deeds we did in those days . . . to seize Montezuma who was the King of the country in his own city and within his own palace, where he had such a numerous guard of warriors . . .
