Abstract

Artists Cassils and Yishay Garbasz offer up a series of material enactments on and through the body that articulate a transformational aesthetics of trans subjectivity, one less concerned with representation than with actions and their indexical impacts. Both artists seek out, create, and become transformational objects for the alteration of self-experience. In so doing, each stretches and exceeds the limits of the identitarian, holding together the complexities of conflict and leaving room for the work of the unconscious in expansive imaginings of what it is to act as an artist in the sphere of the political while inhabiting the messy materiality of the body in the world. As viewers, we are drawn into complex dynamics of enacting the desires and fantasies of the psyche on, in, and through the materiality of the flesh.
