Queers and the Issue of “Priority”

This article examines the issue of priority that is implicit in discussions of domestic violence in Japan. Inspired by the author's experience at a feminist symposium, this article discusses the implicit prioritization of heterosexual women that occurs in feminist discussions of domestic violence. Making use of their own experiences, the author argues that domestic violence is an issue that all individuals may face, including queer individuals. Heterosexuality as a social default must be questioned, and the author remains hopeful that feminists of all sexualities and genders may be able to work together and prevent social exclusion.
