Abstract

In this excerpt of an interview held in 2013, artist Tobaron Waxman discusses their artwork and its relationship to the politics and limits of transgender representation. Rather than relying on the body as the sign of trans, Waxman's recent performance work explores ways to evoke transformation, boundaries, and negotiations of power through a focus on gesture, movement, and the voice as a site of regulation and its resistance. This work also engages with the politics of nationalism and ethnicity, which Waxman sets in relation to other policing and transgressing of borders.
