A wedding photograph from a family album of grandfather “Aspara” taken in the early 2000s in Battambang province, North-western Cambodia. His daughter-in-law was cut out of the photograph when he realised that she communicated HIV to his son. Although both of them passed away, the grandfather felt the need to express his anger by excising the ex-daughter-in-law as if the abolition of her face would also destroy her soul. This analogue mode of deletion prefigures Photoshop, and Facebook’s era of “friend” and “un-friend”. Re-photographed by Sokphea Young.

Some big trees of Abies faxoniana in front indicate that the right back of the Minjiang River was once covered by dense forests. Because of landslides on the mountains on both sides of the river, the landscape has greatly changed. The forests on the right slope were cut down and replaced by secondary forests. In recent years, the area has been reforested, and some young A. faxiniana trees grow among the shrubs.” .

Their house was made with cement and bamboo walls, forming a hill cave. The three persons shown in the new photo are the later generations of the cave family, Mr. Liang Qiyuan, his wife, and granddaughter, Tiantian. In 1961, the Governor of Kaixian County went to meet this family and found that people still lived in the cave. He immediately instructed the local leaders to help this family move out. Caption: “The exquisite Chaste Archway shown in the old photo was built to commemorate a lady of the Liang family, whose husband went to Beijing for imperial examinations and failed 3 times, and then died of a disease caused by worry and indignation. Afterwards, this lady remained a widow and brought up his sons. The Archway was built by her sons with approval of the King of the Qing Dynasty. The man in the new photo is the great-grandson of the lady. He is now 60 years old. The Chaste Archway was destroyed during the “Cultural Revolution” and its base stones were used for building a suspension bridge nearby.” .
