WHAT DOES AMERICA NEED IN A NEW LEFT?

I find it dismaying that writer after writer in your Spring 2014 issue on America’s Left stated, almost as a matter of course, that any new Left would be “anti-capitalist.” I sense that this is a reaction to a lack of integrity in the multinational conglomerates that currently dominate the world economy. I agree. There is a lack of integrity. But if there are to be solutions to the problems created by environmental degradation and climate change, where will these solutions arise, except from within the free-enterprise system? Because we have a free-enterprise system, we can choose to save with a local credit union rather than a multinational bank; we can choose to get food from a farmers’ market or through Community Supported Agriculture; we can power our homes with solar energy; and we can patronize local...
