In the last couple of decades, philosophical and scholarly interest in Gandhi as a thinker has blossomed, leading to a growing body of literature on Gandhi by philosophers and political theorists. Vineet Haksar's book is a welcome and original addition to this literature, developing a cluster of related concepts central to liberal political thought that Haksar has been concerned with over the course of his career. Gandhi and Liberalism is organized into two sections. Part 1 is largely focused on understanding the sense in which Gandhi permits the use of violence, despite the absolute nature of his commitment to nonviolence. Part 1 also includes a chapter on the Constitution of India and its treatment of secularism, in particular its attempt to accommodate religious practices that violate liberal values for the sake of the just and peaceful inclusion of religious minorities.
