This essay seeks to examine the constructed nature of the UK student as seen through the eyes of the media and the legal system following the protests and occupations that took place in late 2010 and 2011. It examines the events of this period and argues that although some of the students' demands were necessarily reformist (saving rather than exiting the university), their collective punishment and negative solidarity provides a model for contemporary political practice in general.
