This essay considers the theme of thought patterns in Adorno’s chapter “Politics and Economics in the Interview Material” in The Authoritarian Personality. Looking at the relationship between the culture industry and the successful dissemination of fascist propaganda, I distill the various elements of authoritarianism that Adorno identifies throughout his writing.

Samantha Rose Hill is the assistant director of the Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and Humanities and visiting assistant professor of political studies at Bard College.
