No different from the populations of any other nation, Americans aspire to comfort and safety. This essay contends that the citizens of the United States have for generations suffered from a collective historical amnesia that makes them compliant to successive political administrations bent on disastrous foreign policy. This neurosis has become acute since the 9/11 attacks. The need to analyze the problem is therefore urgent. The author attempts such an analysis and suggests visions for the day after the scales fall.
