Essays from the Dark Room: Race and Visual Culture Studies Seminar

Sandy Alexandre is associate professor of American literary and cultural studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. More specifically, she reads, thinks, writes, researches, and teaches about how Black American literature considers and processes the histories of racial violence in the United States. Kimberly Juanita Brown an associate professor in the Department of English and Creative Writing at Dartmouth College. Her book, The Repeating Body: Slavery's Visual Resonance in the Contemporary (2015), examines slavery's profound ocular construction, the presence and absence of seeing in relation to the plantation space. Brown is the founder and convener of the Dark Room: Race and Visual Culture Studies Seminar. The Dark Room is a working group of women of color whose work gathers at the intersection of critical race theory and visual culture studies.

Kaysha Corinealdi is assistant professor of history at Emerson College. Her research interests include modern histories of empire, feminism, and Afro-diasporic activism in the Americas. Her work can be found in Black Perspectives, the Caribbean Review of Gender Studies, the International Journal of Africana Studies, and Global South. Corinealdi's book Panama in Black: Afro-Caribbean World Making in the Twentieth Century is scheduled for publication in September 2022.

Eunsong Kim is assistant professor in the Department of English at Northeastern University. Her monograph, The Politics of Collecting: Property and Race in Aesthetic Formation (forthcoming), considers how legal notions of property become foundational to avant-garde and modern understandings of innovation in the arts.
