In 2021 the Mellon Foundation awarded a grant to support the Geoffrey Holder Project, which is committed to providing a scholarly reassessment of the creative output of this well-known public figure but underknown multimodal artist.

Because of his artistic range, Holder is too often seen as a dilettante, and his seminal accomplishments in multiple areas of the arts dismissed collectively. The Geoffrey Holder Project sees this as a systemic error in the academy and, in its wake, an error of interpretation of Caribbean and African diasporic artists like Holder, whose work exceeds the disciplinary frames that make knowledge visible.
