The essay deals with the attempt to achieve fidelity in the translation of Antonio Benítez-Rojo’s fiction: to find an English prose rhythm adequate to a rendition of his novel El mar de las lentejas as Sea of Lentils. It includes some biography and criticism, anchored by an intimate twenty-five-year friendship between Maraniss and Benítez-Rojo.
