In “Modern Puerto Rico,” historian Solsiree del Moral recommends five foundational readings on the nineteenth- and twentieth-century history of Puerto Rico. The selected readings introduce nonspecialists to the history of class, race, and gender relations on the island, with a special focus on colonialism and workers. In addition, the readings explore the twentieth-century history of migration, diaspora, and national identities. Del Moral also recommends two textbooks as a resource for new readers to Puerto Rican history. The five foundational readings Del Moral recommends include: Findlay, Imposing Decency; Rodríguez-Silva, Silencing Race; Mintz, Worker in the Cane; Flores, Divided Borders; and Duany, Puerto Rican Nation on the Move.
