Framing the Contested History of Digital Culture

The introductory essay provides historical and analytical background for articles included in this special issue. It covers the historical methodologies for studying the very recent past, the history of digital culture and the Internet, the interaction between information and communication technologies and global social movements, the problem of digital labor, the rise of open-source software and open-access scholarship, and the issues arising in digitizing historical archives.
