Recreating the World in Twenty-First-Century Philippine Chinese Speculative Fiction

SHIRLEY O. LUA is associate professor of literature at De La Salle University, Manila. She is a jury member of the Manila Critics Circle, which hands out the annual National Book Awards to the best books published in the Philippines; and of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, the film critics group that confers the annual Gawad Urian awards on outstanding Philippine movies. Her research interests include Chinese Philippine literature, Filipino poetics, film criticism, and genre studies. Her studies of Chinese Philippine literature include her doctoral dissertation, “Dragons Becoming Shrimps: Towards a Chinese-Philippine Poetics,” and “The Repeating Parian: Tropic Positions of Chinese-Philippine Fiction in English,” which appeared in Writing Asia: The Literatures in Englishes (2007). She coedited Direk: Essays on Filipino Filmmakers (2018).
