A graph shows the development of three lines over time: (1) the participants’ average reported interest, (2) their average reported confusion in the single-rating condition, and (3) their average reported confusion in the dual-rating condition. The ratings are displayed on the y-axis, ranging from 0 to 100. The x-axis represents viewing time, on which four looping moments in the story are identified. Looping moments 1, 2, and 4 are accompanied by clear spikes in both lines, indicating average confusion, which rise from about 50 to 60 to around 65 to 75. These moments are also accompanied by moderate rises in interest, which constitute the peak moments of reported average interest throughout the film, at around 75 to 80. Looping moment 3 does not correspond to a rise in average reported confusion, but does correspond to a spike in average interest. Interest, in general, rises starkly at the start of the viewing and remains high throughout, between 70 and 80.
