Charles Altieri retired in 2001 after fifty-three years of university teaching from the English Department of the University of California, Berkeley, where he loved virtually every minute, even some department meetings. He continues to do academic work. His book Literature, Education, Society, was published in 2022, and he is well into a book on a phenomenological approach to the nature of imaginative experience in the arts.
