joseph a. stanley is an assistant professor in the Department of Linguistics at Brigham Young University. He recently received his Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Georgia, where he was a contributing member of the Linguistic Atlas Project (http://www.lap.uga.edu/) and developer of the Gazetteer of Southern Vowels (http://lap3.libs.uga.edu/u/jstanley/vowelcharts/). He researches sociolinguistics, dialectology, and quantitative and statistical methods, drawing upon his sociolinguistic fieldwork in the West. His dissertation focused on variation and apparent-time change in vowel formant dynamics in Washington State. He is currently exploring additional aspects of “Mormonese” and is beginning experimental work to understand sociolinguistic perception and meaning of vowel-inherent spectral change.
