This article reviews Katarzyna Pieprzak’s book Imagined Museums: Art and Modernity in Post-colonial Morocco (University of Minnesota Press, 2010). The book covers the discursive usage of claims of modernity in Morocco from 1912, the beginning of the French Protectorate, up to the present. Pieprzak looks to the many manifestations of museums within and outside the context of the nation and to the claims that these institutions and structures lay to notions of modernity.
