Wangechi Mutu’s first solo exhibition in North America, This You Call Civilization? provides an overview of the artist’s oeuvre, focusing on several of her well-known collaged works, such as The Ark Collection and Histology of Fibroid Tumors of the Uterus, as well as more recent video works. The review examines how the exhibited works highlight Mutu’s ongoing interrogation of beauty, femininity, the environment, and the perceptions and depictions of Africa and “Africanness” in Western media.
