The word critical as applied to the theory of the Frankfurt School applies to the views of capitalism and the Enlightenment in Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno's classic work, Dialectic of Enlightenment. The absence of reference to the specificities of German history and generalizations about modernity in general contained, however unintended, an uncritical moment.
