The essay surveys how German painting East and West has dealt with the Third Reich and the Holocaust and how it is shaped by the Cold War confrontation. The comparison of East and West German art opens up both affinities and differences that challenge the lingering Cold War view of East German art as unworthy of consideration and qualitatively inferior to anything produced in the West.
