Transnational Feminist Practices against War

Paola Bacchetta is professor of gender and women’s studies at the University of California, Berkeley. She has written or cowritten six books and over sixty articles on political conflict, transnational feminist and queer of color theory, decolonial and postcolonial theory, multiplicities (intersectionality, assemblages, articulation theorizations, coformations, coproductions), political conflict, and space. Her most recent books are Co-Motion: On Feminist and Queer Alliances (forthcoming) and Global Racialities (coedited with Sunaina Maira and Howard Winant, 2019).

Tina Campt is Owen F. Walker Professor of Humanities and Modern Culture and Media at Brown University and a research associate at the Visual Identities in Art and Design Research Centre (VIAD) at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. She is the author of four books: Other Germans (2004), Image Matters (2012), Listening to Images (2017), and The Black Gaze (forthcoming 2021).

Inderpal Grewal is professor emerita in women’s, gender, and sexuality studies at Yale University. She is the author of Home and Harem: Nation, Gender, Empire, and the Cultures of Travel (1996), Transnational America: Feminisms, Diasporas, Neoliberalisms (2005), and Saving the Security State: Exceptional Citizens in Twenty-First-Century America (2017). She has coedited An Introduction to Women’s Studies: Gender in a Transnational World (2002), Scattered Hegemonies (1994), and Theorizing NGOs: States, Feminisms, and Neoliberalism (2014). Her current projects examine security regimes, patriarchal authoritarianism, and bureaucracy.

Caren Kaplan is professor emerita of American studies at the University of California, Davis. Her research draws on cultural geography, landscape art, and military history to explore the ways in which undeclared as well as declared wars produce representational practices of atmospheric politics. Her recent publications include Aerial Aftermaths: Wartime from Above (2018) and Life in the Age of Drone Warfare (2017).

Minoo Moallem is a professor of gender and women’s studies and director of media studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Trained as a sociologist, she writes on postcolonial feminist studies, transnational cultural studies, nationalism and consumerism, immigration and diaspora studies, Middle Eastern studies, and Iranian visual cultures and diasporas. She is author of several research monographs, edited collections, and articles, and she recently completed a digital media project, “Nation-on-the Move.”

Jennifer Terry is professor and chair of the Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of California, Irvine. Her books include Attachments to War: Biomedical Logics and Violence in Twenty-First-Century America (2017), An American Obsession: Science, Medicine, and Homosexuality in Modern Society (1999); and two coedited anthologies, Deviant Bodies: Critical Perspectives on Difference in Science and Popular Culture (1995) and Processed Lives: Gender and Technology in Everyday Life (1997). She has written on reproductive politics, the history of sexual science, contemporary scientific approaches to the sex lives of animals, love of objects, signature injuries of war, and the relationship between war-making practices and entertainment.
