Translating the Global: Effects of Transnational Organizing on Local Feminist Discourses and Practices in Latin America
sonia e. alvarez is associate professor of politics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She is the author of Engendering Democracy in Brazil: Women's Movements in Transition Politics (Princeton, 1990) and co-editor of The Making of Social Movements in Latin America: Identity, Strategy, and Democracy, with Arturo Escobar (Westview, 1992) and of Cultures of Politics/Politics of Cultures: Re-visioning Latin American Social Movements, with Evalina Dagnino and A. Escobar (Westview, 1998). Between 1993 and 1996, she coordinated the Rights and Social Justice Program for the Brazil Office of the Ford Foundation. She is working on a new book, tentatively entitled Contentious (Trans)formations: Feminist Readings of Civil Society, Social Movements and Transnational Organizing in Latin America.
