JOHN W. MCKERLEY is an oral historian, photographer, and audio producer whose work focuses on labor and civil rights organizing in the South and Midwest. Since 2013, he has served as the oral historian at the University of Iowa Labor Center, where he manages the Iowa Labor History Oral Project, an almost fifty-year-old collaboration to document the lives of Iowa workers and their unions. His recent publications include an edited interview with photojournalist David Bacon, “Social Justice Writing and Photography: The Reality Check and Beyond,” which appeared in the Routledge Handbook of the Anthropology of Labor, edited by Sharryn Kasmir and Lesley Gill, in 2022.
