The Phonology of Mongolian is a substantial and significant contribution to the linguistic literature on Mongolian. The book contains a brief introduction on the history of Mongolian linguistic studies followed by ten chapters, the first seven concerning the phonology of modern standard Mongolian (the Khalkha dialect as spoken in Ulaanbaatar) and the last three Old Mongolian (the language from the time of the Mongol Empire), the modern dialects and languages, and Mongolian historical phonology. The first two chapters provide a solid overview of the phonetics of standard Mongolian vowels and consonants, respectively, on the basis of which the third chapter gives a phonemic analysis of the language and the fifth an overview of its major phonological processes. The sixth and seventh chapters discuss syllabification and prosody (stress, timing, and intonation), and the fourth chapter discusses the writing systems currently used for Mongolian (Cyrillic and classical scripts).
