The Female Rehabilitation Home in Sharjah receives Arab girls prone to deviancy between the ages of nine and nineteen where the most ubiquitous cases relate to issues of adultery and illegitimate pregnancy. Emphasis is placed on religious discipline and activity for rehabilitative care. Rehabilitating femininity is construed through henna application and its beauty salon courses to provide the girls with career opportunities once they are dismissed. In a 2015 interview with me, Mariam Al-Salman, director of the Female Rehabilitation Home Sharjah (fig. 1), emphasized the centrality of psychological rehabilitation and stressed their role in straightening the personality of female offenders back to its “original form.”
