In May 2015, I submitted the last issue of volume 40 to Duke University Press, which marks the passing of JHPPL's fortieth anniversary. To commemorate that passing, I offer a brief history of the origins of the journal. This history, of course, is limited by my perspective and influenced by the colleagues I was fortunate enough to consult. Given time constraints, I want to emphasize that this is more of a personal commentary than an “official” history. The purpose of my efforts is to thank those who were there when the journal started, have been with the journal throughout its intellectual life, and are still with us today.
