Why do we read books? In a professional setting, we probably read mostly for the contents. In a personal context, however, I may direct myself to particular genres, but mostly I look for beautifully written, well-structured, original pieces of writing. Michele Alacevich's book offers us both: content and style. It has been a while since I read such a page-turner from an academic publishing house. The writing is clear, sharp, and precise. Alacevich effortlessly explains complicated and nuanced theories and models. I was carefully led on a journey through Albert Hirschman's life, always knowing where Alacevich was taking me and why. The signposts were perfectly placed and never distracted me from the book's fascinating narrative. Moreover, the sentences, paragraphs, sections, and chapters never failed to meaningfully engage with the subject at hand; not once did I feel the familiar need to skip over parts that were inundated with seemingly irrelevant...
