Benjamin Keen’s obituary notice of Lewis Hanke [November 1993] states that he served in 1974 as “chairman (sic for president) of the American Historical Association, the first Latin Americanist to gain that distinction.” That statement is, of course, incorrect. Herbert Eugene Bolton, a pioneer Latin Americanist, was president of the American Historical Association in 1932. At its annual meeting in Toronto he delivered one of the more memorable, if controversial, presidential addresses, “The Epic of Greater America.”
