marcos cueto was the 1990-91 scholar in residence at the Rockefeller Archive Center. He is currently a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the program in Science, Technology, and Society at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A Peruvian specialist, he received his doctorate from Columbia University. His articles have been published in Isis, Social Studies of Science, and the Bulletin of the History of Medicine.

david s. parker is assistant professor of history at the University of Rhode Island. He received his doctorate from Stanford University.

susan migden socolow is Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Latin American History at Emory University. She is the author of The Merchants of Viceregal Buenos Aires: Family and Commerce, 1778—1810 (1978) and The Bureaucrats of Buenos Aires, 1769-1810: Amor al Real Servicio (1987) and the co-editor of Cities and Society in Colonial Latin America (1988).

eduardo a. zimmermann received his doctorate in modern history from Oxford University in 1991. He is assistant professor of history at the Universidad de San Andrés, Buenos Aires.
