This book has had a curious and somewhat confusing publishing history. Originally the author’s doctoral dissertation, it was first published in 1970 in Spanish with the title La formación de las haciendas azucareras y los orígenes del APRA. In 1973, the University of Texas published a very slightly revised version in English with a completely different title: Modernization, Dislocation and Aprismo: Origins of the Peruvian Aprista Party, 1870-1932, reviewed in the HAHR (November 1974).

The volume under consideration, although billed as “revisada y aumentada,” is nothing more than a Spanish version of the somewhat modified English version. What is new is a good preface by Peruvian economic historian Heraclio Bonilla which critically analyzes Klarén’s methodology and conclusions.
