Another important source book on Chilean colonial history has been made readily available for the historian. Alonso González de Nájera, Maestre decampo in 1607, wrote an extremely detailed and penetrating analysis of Spanish-Araucanian relations in the first decade of the seventeenth century. He served for five years on the frontier and his history was designed to inform the Crown of the real problems the Spanish faced in trying to subdue the Araucanians.

González de Nájera’s account provides the reader with invaluable information on Araucanian life and military techniques as well as the structure of the Spanish settlement in Chile and campaign life on the frontier.
