Although this book is mainly a compendium of journalistic snippets describing the most sensational political occurrences in Latin America in 1970, it is, perhaps, useful as a summary of the structural ties between American governmental agencies and Latin American countries. This “news-in-review” approach precludes any but the most naive analysis of the events included. The authors’ attempts at forecasting trends in the seventies suffer the same faults of shallowness and sensationalism. The only useful purposes of this book are that it provides an index to major news events in Latin America during 1970 of relevance to American foreign policy and contains a compilation of the many governmental agencies having significant dealings with Latin American countries.
