When the University of Texas at Austin recently selected the Managing Editor as Acting Dean and Provost-designate for Arts and Sciences, a reorganization of the editorial staffing became necessary. With the approval of the Board of Editors, Professor James Lockhart will join Professor Richard Graham as an Associate Editor working with the Managing Editor, effective with the August 1971 issue. This addition to the local editorial group should make it possible for the Managing Editor to fulfill his responsibilities to the HAHR despite his increased administrative commitment.

At the dinner session of the Board of Editors and the Advisory Editors held in conjunction with the AHA meeting, some matters of interest to our readership were discussed and acted upon:

  1. Publication of articles in Spanish. It was noted that HAHR is the main outlet for publication of United States scholarly articles. It was agreed that we would continue to publish an occasional review in a language other than English; that articles which have appeared elsewhere would not be republished in translated form; that in the case of an exceptional article, the Board could be circulated for approval of the publication of a translation to be arranged either by the author or through the HAHR editorial office.

  2. Articles relating to Spain and Portugal in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It was agreed that manuscripts in this area would be considered when the subject matter has a direct relationship with or is in accord with the Latin American focus of the journal. It was decided that the editorial staff would assess the appropriateness of modem peninsular articles in each instance.

Duke University Press, on the recommendation of the Board of Editors, has authorized the Review of Reviews to reprint reviews from HAHR. All reprinted reviews will carry full credit as to the source; there will be no condensing or editing, and the reviewer’s name and institutional affiliation will be listed.

Lastly, the editorial staff wishes to call to the attention of scholars interested in submitting articles to the HAHR that the use of services offered by certain firms for the printing and distribution of papers presented at professional meetings constitutes publishing, and so precludes subsequent publication in our journal.
