This excellent reader naturally emphasizes slavery in the United States, but several articles deal with Latin America: an excerpt from Herbert S. Klein’s comparison of slavery in Virginia and Cuba; another from David Brion Davis’ comparative study of the institution in the Americas; and much of Arnold A. Sio’s article “Interpretations of Slavery.” This is not enough to qualify the book for use by itself in courses on Latin America, but it may provide a convenient basis for comparison in conjunction with the standard works on Latin American slavery.
