This bibliography lists all books and pamphlets published in Mexico during the year 1958 and also encompasses publications of government offices and theses completed at Mexican universities during the year. Each of the 4289 entries indicates the author, title, date, publisher, number of pages, and size. There are no annotations. The volumes are listed alphabetically within library classification categories. Some 43% of the entries are theses, most of them in the field of applied sciences. An extensive index provides ample cross references, employing subjects, titles, and authors. Indeed the index is somewhat cumbersome, occupying 321 pages.
The bibliography’s value to the historian will be somewhat limited by its general nature, for the majority of the volumes listed are outside the social sciences. The history section, which is grouped with geography, travel, and biography in a category separated from the social sciences, contains only 150 entries, two-thirds of them dealing with Mexico. Inevitably the categorizing of individual volumes causes some difficulties—for example, most historians will be surprised to discover Isidro Fabela’s Documentos históricos de la Revolución Mexicana listed under “Derecho Internacional.” The historian will find this bibliography only of peripheral use because of the small number of historical entries and the limited time span.
