Designed primarily for British readers, this little survey of an intricate subject is as compact as a space capsule. In its organization and readability it may stimulate American writers or teachers, and an occasional characteristic British comment or emphasis may start a chain of thought. Perhaps the outstanding interpretational short-coming is the anti-Spanish tone of the section dealing with the colonial period. Nevertheless, few American paperbacks of this scope provide a more useful introduction to the casual lay reader.
