Bandeirantes and Pioneers is a long overdue translation of a remarkable book first published in 1954 in Brazil. Written by a Brazilian intellectual, Vianna Moog, it is a comparative study of the development of Brazilian and United States cultures and provides acute insight into contemporary differences between these two nations. The style of the book is that of brilliant conversation. One wishes for the opportunity to interrupt, to refute, to pursue further, to hear more. The translator is to be congratulated for having preserved the informal and free-flowing style of the author. Bandeirantes and Pioneers is an essay which should be part of the equipment not only of students of Brazilian, Latin American, and North American culture, but also of all those who seek to understand the motivating forces and developmental sequences of contemporary society. (Originally reviewed in November 1955.)
