This is a welcome Spanish translation from the German of an outstanding contribution to the literature of settlement history by a young German geographer who was raised in Guatemala and studied at Kiel. Sandner’s Agrarkolonisation in Costa Rica: Siedlung, Wirtschaft und Sozialgefüge an der Pioniergrenze, a work based on more than a year of hard field work, is strongly historically oriented and is a must for anyone interested in the process of land occupance in Latin America. The translation is by Federico Gutiérrez Braun, director of the Instituto Geográfico, and an unstinting admirer of Sandner’s work. For the historian interested in what geography has to offer the field of Latin American studies this is the answer. There is an admirable use of maps and aerial photographs as historical documents.
