Only recently this enterprising publisher from Austria published Volume I—which was the Ulrich Schmidel history of his trip of 1534-1554 to Argentina—of their new series of early voyages. As with the Schmidel, the Benzoni work is an exact reproduction of an early edition, using the same print and language as well as illustrations. This one is a 1572 edition published in Venice. It is in Italian. The introduction is by Ferdinand Anders and is in German, telling of the life and work of Benzoni and including a chapter about the discovery of America. There is also a bibliography of the various editions of the Benzoni work and selected books which cite and discuss Benzoni. It also has an eight-page outline of the subject matter of the Benzoni work. Benzoni was in America from 1541 to 1556 and witnessed some of the most crucial events of the Age of Discovery. Benzoni is an important source. This choice by the Akademische Druck und Verlagsanstalt von Graz is a good one. It is a beautiful little book.
