Professor Porrua Pérez has published a collection of notes designed to serve as a guide for a course in political theory. In presenting an analysis of what he considers to be the fundamental natural rights of the individual which should be respected and protected by the state, the author deals with such matters as the rights of life, dignity, travel, conscience, work, association, and property. Drawing heavily on Jean Dabin’s Doctrine générale de l’état, Professor Porrua Pérez takes a strong stand against twentieth century totalitarianism of the Nazi and Communist varieties, condemns French liberalism, and emphasizes the importance of Catholic doctrine concerning natural rights. This little book may prove to be of help to students enrolled in the author’s classes, but it is of no value to the historian or political scientist because of its brief and superficial treatment of a profound subject.
