Historical Activities

A conference on “Religion and Social Change in Latin America” was conducted at the University of Notre Dame April 22-24, 1963. Frederick B. Pike of the Department of History served as Co-Chairman.

The Business History Review is planning to publish a special issue devoted to the role of business in Latin America from the colonial period to the present. Historians interested in native or foreign business enterprises in Latin America are urged to submit suggestions or articles for possible publication to Managing Editor, Business History Review, 214-16 Baker Library, Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, Boston 63, Massachusetts.

The minutes of the Council of the Organization of American States are now available for general distribution on Microcards as a result of an agreement signed by the Pan American Union, the General Secretariat of the O. A. S., and Microcard Editions, Inc., 901 26th St. N.W., Washington 7, D. C.

Personal News

The Committee on Social Science Personnel of the SSRC has awarded Research Training Fellowships to John P. Bell for research in Costa Rica on the revolution of 1948, and Harold B. Johnson, Jr., for research in Spain on medieval and contemporary peasant society in Galicia.

The Joint Committee on Latin American Studies of the SSRC and the American Council of Learned Societies, has awarded grants for Latin American studies to Louis E. Bumgartner for research in Spain on the independence of Central America, Benjamin Keen for research in Mexico on the Azetec image in Western thought from Cortez to the present, Frederick B. Pike for research in Peru on political, social, and intellectual history since 1880, Rollie E. Poppino for research in Brazil on social and economic history, and Alfred J. Tapson for research on the development and influence of the frontier in Argentina.

Professor Max Savelle of the University of Washington has inaugurated a Seminar in North American Studies at the Centro de Investigaciones de Historia Americana of the University of Chile, beginning in June, 1963. The Center, which is directed by Dr. Eugenio Pereira Salas, was established in 1960 with the aid of a four year grant from the Rockefeller Foundation.

Wayne M. Clegern has been named associate professor and chairman of the Department of History, Louisiana State University in New Orleans.

Donald B. Cooper has been named assistant professor in the Department of History, Tulane University.

Donald E. Worcester has been named chairman of the Department of History, Texas Christian University.

David Bushnell has been named associate professor in the Department of History, University of Florida.

Terence S. Tarr has been named assistant professor in the Department of History, University of Denver.

Charles J. Kolinski has been named assistant professor of Latin American Studies at Rollins College.

Boger M. Haigh has been named assistant professor in the Department of History, North Texas State University.

Ronald C. Newton has been named assistant professor in the Department of History, Purdue University.
