The words “Columbus letter,” unless otherwise indicated, mean the one describing the discovery of America, written aboard the Niña by the admiral during the homeward voyage, and dated March 4, 1493. Carlos Sanz of course refers to this, and he offers a bibliography (who can say whether it is complete?) of all the printed translations and editions of the letter from Epistola Christofori Colom published in Rome May 25, 1493 to La carta de Colón which appeared in Madrid in 1958. It requires over 300 pages to enumerate these with appropriate comments.
Such a task would be an extreme labor of love but for the fact that this is somewhat more than a mere bibliography. Sanz extends his researches beyond the limits of cataloguing and often discusses Columbus subjects at some length. It is hard to imagine anyone perusing this work from cover to cover, but as a reference volume it will have its place.
