Just a few weeks over 93, anthropologist Sidney W. Mintz passed away in December 2015. A long and productive life blessed with good health ended suddenly from injuries sustained in a fall. As odd as this may seem regarding a person his age, Sid Mintz's death felt quite untimely. Until the end, Sid enjoyed life and was beloved by family, colleagues, and friends. He was a keen observer, a great storyteller, an expert cook and food enthusiast, a young old man who often joked about his longevity. On his 92nd birthday, he wrote in an e-mail that “I guess I'm also amazed at how long I've lived. I figured out I've now lived equal to 39 percent of the life of the Republic.” I suspect Sid may also have done the numbers for 93, or 100.
