Those of us who remember Alfonso Quiroz were deeply saddened to learn of his death in January 2013, after more than a year fighting against an aggressive cancer. Without any kind of doubt, Alfonso was the most brilliant and prolific historian of our generation in Peru. His intellectual curiosity and vast bibliographical production were simply astonishing and will last for many years ahead as milestones for those interested in Peruvian and Hispanic American economic history. As his close friend and well-known historian Marcos Cueto said, maybe the best way to describe Alfonso is as a tireless, vital, and creative person. His departure creates a huge emptiness in the Latin American academic world.
