In a review of The Jesuit and the Incas: The Extraordinary Life of Padre Blas Val-era, Pedro Guibovich-Pérez claims that I depend upon the controversial Naples documents as sole evidence for my hypothesis regarding Valera’s imprisonment by the Jesuits for heresy. This, however, is not the case. My thesis about Valera’s imprisonment is based on an extensive survey of Peruvian Inquisition documents in the Archivo Histórico Nacional (Madrid), which demonstrated that, contrary to Jesuit assertions, Valera was not imprisoned by the Inquisition. I cite testimony from the Jesuit Lucio Garcete to reveal the concern with heresy among those Jesuits who imprisoned Valera, and I suggest that it was no coincidence that Valera was punished immediately after the Peruvian Jesuits received the privilege to discipline heretics themselves.
