Though published six years ago, many scholars might not be aware of Memorial de Sololá: Edición facsimilar del manuscrito original. This latest work transcribes and translates the monumental early colonial Kaqchikel document of the Xajil clan of Guatemala, but with some distinct changes from prior publications by other historians. Simón Otzoy Calí tirelessly gave years to reinvestigating the famous Kaqchikel Mayan chronicle. Though many scholars since the nineteenth century had transcribed, translated, and published large portions of the text, this work improves on their previous efforts. Otzoy, a native speaker of Kaqchikel from San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala, attempted a “cleaner” translation of the Kaqchikel into Spanish, as well as incorporating the then updated standards for Kaqchikel orthography of the 1950s.
